How we reduced Plastic from our life
We all have heard of how plastic is endanger to enviroment, I am not going to preach here about the same. Like most people, I made sure that we are not throwing plastic in the lush green park or lake side, separated milk carton, plastic wraps, bags, cosmetics etc and it goes to the recycle trash. Is this the only solution? Will we be able to lead a plastic-free life? The answer is Yes, there are many leading a plastic free life but it will be difficult. One thing we all can do is to reduce as much as plastic we can. This blog is about our journey on how we are trying to reduce plastic from our life.
Two years back I was diagnosed with PCOS, it made me stressed out for a longer period of time but worst part was I never put more thought to improving the situation until very recently. Past few months I have been watching to various videos classes and reading articles on PCOS, though there are multiple factors affecting the medical condition like sedentary lifestyle and diet, it has come to light that plastic plays a serious role in aggravating the problem of PCOS.
“Women with the polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the most common hormone imbalance in women of reproductive age, may be more vulnerable to exposure to the chemical bisphenol A (BPA, a weak estrogen), found in many plastic household items, according to a new study”
This study was an eye opener for us, that’s when we decided to get rid of plastic from our life wherever we can. First thing we did was an assessment of plastic usage in our day to day, how and where we are using it. We could find plastic every corner of our life :(
These are few thing we did to replace plastic from our life which will do good for our health and environment.
- Replace water bottle, food containers with glass or stainless steel. Make sure glass is BPA free and lead free.
- Use bee wax wrappers for food.
- Use cotton bags for grocery shopping
- Buy food from bulk section of the store (here you can use cotton bag or glass containers), this will save your money too. Few stores with bulk section - Whole Foods, Sprouts, Central Market.
- Buy and eat organic produce. If you can start small level farming at your house, kudos to you!!
- Use eco friendly skincare and makeup. Few brands which go by this motto are Youth To The People, The Ordinary, REN, Krave Beauty and so on.
- Learn to reuse and reduce plastic. The rule of thumb is reuse bottles for other purposes like cleaning or gardening so that you are not affecting environment and health.
It is not easy to be plastic free, but we all can definitely take these steps and reduce plastic usage so that Mother Nature can survive for our future generation. Zero waste by one person won't make any change, but plastic free by thousands of people will definitely make a change.
